Expiration & Storage Tips
When does oat flour expire?
Oat flour retains its quality for approximately one to two years when stored properly under ideal conditions. This typically means keeping it unopened in a cool, dry, dark place. Once opened, oat flour stays fresh for up to 6 months, although it's best used within the first few months for optimal flavor. In the freezer, oat flour can last for up to two years.
How do you tell if oat flour is bad?
Even if you pay meticulous attention to storage, oat flour can still go rancid over time. The easiest way to detect if your oat flour has gone bad is by smell. Good oat flour has a mild, slightly sweet smell, whereas when it goes bad, it develops a sharp, off smell. Oat flour that's turned will also have a bitter aftertaste that's not present in fresh flour. Changes in color and the presence of mold are also clear signs that your oat flour has spoiled.
Tips for storing oat flour to extend shelf life
• Store the oat flour in an airtight container. An airtight container prevents exposure to air, moisture, and heat, which can speed up rancidity.
• Keep it in a cool, dry place away from light. A pantry or cupboard is an ideal location. Extreme temperature changes can deteriorate the quality of the flour.
• If you don't plan on using the oat flour soon after buying it, consider freezing it. This will significantly extend its shelf life. Just be sure to thaw it room temperature when you are ready to use it.
• Always make sure your hands, utensils, and containers are dry before handling the oat flour to avoid contamination and keep it fresh longer.
