Expiration & Storage Tips
When does almond flour expire?
Almond flour is more perishable than other flours due to its high fat content. Unopened, it can last about a year past the printed date on its package if stored in a cool, dry place. After opening, you have about 3 months to use it if it's stored in your pantry, but if you keep it in the refrigerator, it can last anywhere from 6 months to a year. As for freezing, it can extend the flour's lifespan up to 2 years.
How do you tell if almond flour is bad?
When almond flour goes bad, it can develop a rancid or sour smell due to the oils in the flour turning bad. If your almond flour smells odd, it's best not to use it. The texture can change as well, if it feels unusually clumpy or if you see any signs of mold, do not consume it.
Tips for storing almond flour to extend shelf life
• Store your almond flour in airtight containers to keep it fresh. These can be jars, sealed plastic bags or an original package tightly closed.
• Keep it in a cool, dark, and dry place. Pantry is generally good, but the fridge or freezer is even better, especially if you plan on storing it there for a long period of time.
• If stored in the freezer, make sure to let it come back to room temperature before using it in baking, to ensure it mixes well with other ingredients.
• Always check the flour before use, paying attention to its smell and overall appearance.
