Expiration & Storage Tips
When does rolled oats expire?
Rolled oats can generally be stored and used for two years when unopened. They will remain safe to eat for about 6 to 12 months past their printed expiration date if stored correctly. Once opened, rolled oats stay fresh for about 6 months in the pantry. And if you prefer to freeze your rolled oats, they can last a good 2 to 3 years in a well-sealed container in the freezer.
How do you tell if rolled oats is bad?
Primarily, your senses are the best tools for identifying spoiled rolled oats. Firstly, if there's a change in texture, it might be a sign. Fresh rolled oats are dry. If they become damp or clumpy, it's a sign of moisture exposure, an open gate for bacteria and mold. You should also look for signs of discoloration or mold growth. Lastly, give them a sniff. If your oats have an off, musty or mildew like smell instead of their standard earthy smell, it's time to let them go.
Tips for storing rolled oats to extend shelf life
• Always store your rolled oats in a cool, dry area out of direct sunlight. This could be a pantry, cupboard, or even your refrigerator.
• After opening the package, it’s best to store the rolled oats in an airtight container to keep moisture and pests out. Make sure your container is completely dry before you pour your oats in.
• If you buy in bulk or live in a very humid environment, consider storing your oats in the fridge or freezer in an airtight container. This can extend their shelf life while also protecting against rancidity caused by warm temperatures.
• If you do choose to freeze your oats, there's no need to defrost them before using. They can go directly from the freezer into your pot or baking recipe.
• Regularly rotate your stock of rolled oats, using older packages first.
