Expiration & Storage Tips
When does almond milk expire?
Unopened, almond milk should last until the use-by date printed on the package. Once opened, it should ideally be used within 7-10 days. After this, the almond milk may start to develop a sour taste and smell. Despite being plant-based, almond milk can still spoil if not used promptly after opening, as it is susceptible to bacterial growth. When frozen, almond milk can be stored for up to 3 months. However, the texture and taste may change slightly after thawing.
How do you tell if almond milk is bad?
If your almond milk has gone bad, it will have a sour smell and taste. Additionally, you might notice clumps or chunks in the milk, a thickened texture, or a change in color. If you notice any of these signs, it's best to avoid consuming the almond milk and discard it immediately.
Tips for storing almond milk to extend shelf life
• Keep the almond milk refrigerated, even when unopened. Store it at the back of the fridge where the temperature is the most constant.
• Always seal the almond milk carton or bottle tightly after each use.
• If you won't be using the almond milk quickly, consider freezing it in ice cube trays for easy portioning in smoothies or other recipes. Remember to thaw it in the refrigerator for a day or two before you need to use it.
