Expiration & Storage Tips
When does gnocchi expire?
Unopened store-bought gnocchi typically lasts in the pantry for 2-3 months past the 'best by' date on the package. After opening, gnocchi should be cooked within 2-3 days. If you've cooked your gnocchi, it can stay in the fridge for about 3-5 days. Frozen gnocchi, whether homemade or purchased, can be stored for up to 1-2 months in the freezer without losing quality.
How do you tell if gnocchi is bad?
Signs that gnocchi has gone bad include moldy spots or a musty smell. Also, if you've opened a pack of gnocchi and didn't cook it within 2-3 days, it's best to inspect it carefully before cooking. For cooked gnocchi, if it smells off, has visible mold, or a slimy texture, then it's time to toss it. For frozen gnocchi, look for large ice crystals or freezer burn as sign of poor quality and potential spoilage.
Tips for storing gnocchi to extend shelf life
• Always store unopened gnocchi in a cool, dry place.
• Once opened, store any unused raw gnocchi in an airtight container in the fridge.
• Cooked gnocchi should also be refrigerated in an airtight container. To reheat, simply toss in a pan with some butter or sauce until heated through. Remember not to reheat more than once!
• For longer storage, consider freezing your gnocchi. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet, freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. This prevents them from sticking together. No need to defrost before cooking, just add a few more minutes to the cooking time.
