Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Basil Pesto expire?
Basil pesto, whether bought from a store or homemade, typically has a refrigerator life of approximately 5-7 days once opened. Unopened store-bought jars of pesto can be kept for 1-2 years if stored properly in your pantry. If you freeze it, you can get an extended shelf-life of up to 6-9 months!
How do you tell if Basil Pesto is bad?
Pesto that has gone bad typically has a duller green color instead of being bright and vibrant. It might also develop a tangy or sour smell, and might get a little separation or have visible mold growth. Always trust your instinct. If it smells off or you see any mold, it’s safer to discard it.
Tips for storing Basil Pesto to extend shelf life
• Always store your pesto in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer to help extend its shelf life.
• If it's homemade and you plan to store it in a jar, always make sure the jar is sterile to avoid introducing bacteria.
• Whenever you use your pesto, try to use a clean spoon. Introducing food particles into the jar can lead to premature spoilage.
• If you want to freeze your pesto, try pouring it into an ice cube tray. Once it's frozen, pop out the pesto cubes and store them in a freezer bag. That way, you'll have conveniently sized portions ready to go anytime!
