Expiration & Storage Tips
When does orecchiette expire?
Unopened orecchiette will typically last for about 2-3 years in your pantry if kept in a cool, dark and dry place. The packaging usually provides an expiration date, but this generally indicates the product's peak quality. Once the package is opened, aim to use your pasta within 1 year. Homemade orecchiette, due to lack of preservatives, usually stays fresh for 2-3 days in the fridge. It can also be frozen for up to 2-3 months. Don't ever worry about the pasta expiring if it's properly stored in the freezer.
How do you tell if orecchiette is bad?
If your dry pasta has changed color or gives off a funny smell, it’s advisable to discard it as it has likely gone bad. For homemade or cooked pasta, look for signs of mold or oddly off smells. If the pasta is slimy or sticky, it has definitely gone bad. Always trust your senses if something seems off!
Tips for storing orecchiette to extend shelf life
• Keep dry, uncooked orecchiette in a cool, dry place inside an airtight container once opened to keep away from moisture. Keep it away from sunlight to avoid any change in flavor.
• If you've made homemade orecchiette, consider dusting it with flour before refrigerating it in an airtight container. It prevents the pasta from sticking together.
• You can also freeze homemade orecchiette. Lay it out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper for an hour before transferring it to a freezer bag. This prevents the pasta pieces from sticking together in the freezer.
• Once frozen, do not defrost your pasta before adding it to boiling water. It can be cooked straight from the freezer, adding a minute or two to the cooking time.
