Expiration & Storage Tips
When does half & half expire?
Unopened half & half typically stays good for about a week past the printed date on the package when stored in the fridge. Once you’ve opened it, it's best to use it within 3 to 4 days as bacteria tends to grow quickly. Some folks also freeze half & half to extend its shelf life. In such case, it can be used for up to 4 months but the quality may degrade a bit with the cream developing ice crystals and potentially a grainy texture when thawed.
How do you tell if half & half is bad?
Spoiled half & half will smell sour, similarly to other spoiled dairy products. You may also see the liquid starting to separate or clump and could possibly have mold. If you notice an off smell, change in texture or color, or growth of mold, it's best to throw it out.
Tips for storing half & half to extend shelf life
• Always store half & half in the fridge at or below 40 °F (4 °C).
• An unopened pack should go into the fridge as soon as possible and should be checked for 'best by' or 'use by' date frequently.
• Once opened, make sure to close the package tightly when not in use to avoid bacteria from getting in.
• Avoid storing it in the fridge door as the temperature can fluctitate due to the constant opening and closing.
• If you choose to freeze it, make sure to leave some head space for expansion and shake it well before using to redistribute any fat that may have separated.
