Expiration & Storage Tips
When does coconut oil expire?
Unopened coconut oil can last anywhere from two to five years past the printed date on the package. The very long shelf life is due to its high saturated fat content. Once the coconut oil is opened, its shelf life reduces slightly; but it can still safely be kept at room temperature for up to two years. The refrigerator isn't necessary, but if you store it there the coconut oil can last even longer. If you opt to freeze the oil, it will last indefinitely.
How do you tell if coconut oil is bad?
Even though coconut oil has a long shelf life, it isn't immune to spoilage. Signs of spoilage include a sour or musty smell, discoloration (yellow or dark streaks), and if the oil has been exposed to heat, it may develop mold. Rancid coconut oil tends to have a soapy taste. Remember, when in doubt, toss it out to avoid any potential health risks.
Tips for storing coconut oil to extend shelf life
• Always store coconut oil in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight.
• Keep the lid tightly sealed to prevent exposure to air, which can speed up the oxidation process.
• When using coconut oil, try not to dip your fingers or a dirty spoon into the jar to avoid cross-contamination.
• If you wish, you can portion coconut oil into smaller containers so that you only use what you need, once opened the rest remains untouched.
• Freezing coconut oil is totally fine, just ensure it's in an airtight container. To defrost it, put it in the fridge for a few hours or leave it out at room temperature.
