Expiration & Storage Tips
When does almond oil expire?
Almond oil can last about 1 year unopened on your pantry shelf, stored in a cool, dark place. Once opened, it lasts anywhere from 6 months to a year, depending on the variety - refined or unrefined. Unrefined oil, favored for its robust flavor and nutrients, lasts around six months in the refrigerator, whereas refined oil can last a year. However, both types benefit from refrigeration after opening. Almond oil, though less common, can be frozen for up to 2 years and needs to be thawed in the refrigerator or at room temperature before use.
How do you tell if almond oil is bad?
Smell and taste are your best tools to determine whether almond oil is still fresh. As almond oil spoils, it develops a sour, off smell, much like any other oils. Its taste will also turn bitter or metallic. The color might darken over time, although this is not the most reliable indicator, as exposure to light can also change the color.
Tips for storing almond oil to extend shelf life
• Keep almond oil in a cool, dark cupboard away from the stove and other sources of heat. This principle applies to both unopened and opened bottles of almond oil.
• After opening, consider refrigerating almond oil to extend its shelf life. If the oil solidifies in the fridge, let it come to room temperature before using.
• For longer-term storage, freezing almond oil is an option. Use ice cube trays for easy portioning. Just remember to thaw it in the refrigerator or at room temperature before you need to use it.
• Buy almond oil in smaller quantities that you can use within six months to a year, to ensure freshness.
• Always use clean, dry utensils to dip into the almond oil to avoid introducing bacteria into the bottle.
