Expiration & Storage Tips
When does hazelnut oil expire?
Hazelnut oil usually has a relatively short shelf life compared to other cooking oils. Unopened, it can generally last around 9 to 12 months from the production date if stored in a cool, dark place. Once opened, however, hazelnut oil should ideally be consumed within 3 months for best flavor and nutritional benefits. Kept in the fridge, it can last a bit longer, extending its freshness for up to 6 months. Freezing is not typically recommended for oils, including hazelnut oil, as it can alter the taste and consistency significantly.
How do you tell if hazelnut oil is bad?
If hazelnut oil has gone rancid, it will develop a sharp, bitter or sour smell that differs from its typical mildly sweet and nutty aroma. The oil might also have a cloudy appearance or show signs of separation. The taste will be noticeably off as well, it might taste bitter or sour. Always remember, when in doubt, throw it out!
Tips for storing hazelnut oil to extend shelf life
• Always store hazelnut oil in a cool, dark place like a pantry.
• Once opened, store the oil in the fridge to prolong its freshness. However, always let it return to room temperature before using as cold can alter the texture and taste.
• Keep the oil in a tightly sealed glass or plastic container to avoid exposure to air, which can speed up the oxidation process.
• Avoid exposing the oil to direct sunlight or heat sources, as this can cause the oil to degrade or become rancid faster.
• Always use clean utensils when handling the oil to prevent contamination.
• Don't store the oil for too long, even in the fridge – it's better to buy small amounts more frequently.
