Expiration & Storage Tips
When does macadamia oil expire?
Macadamia oil generally has a very long shelf life, often up to 2 years unopened. The printed date on the package is a good guideline, but if kept in ideal conditions which are cool, dry and dark, it can last even beyond that. Once the oil has been opened, it is best to use it within 6 to 12 months. As for freezing, it is not commonly done and it can make the oil become cloudy and thick, but it doesn't affect its safety or nutritional properties. If you decide to freeze it, remember to defrost it at room temperature and shake it well before use.
How do you tell if macadamia oil is bad?
Telling if macadamia oil has gone bad is quite easy. First, use your sense of smell. If the oil has a sour, rancid or off-smell, it has likely turned. Alternatively, you can taste a small amount. If it has a bitter or unpleasant taste, it's time to toss it. You can also observe the color and clarity. If it's cloudy or has changed color, it could be a sign of spoilage.
Tips for storing macadamia oil to extend shelf life
• Store macadamia oil in a cool, dry and dark place. A pantry or cupboard away from the stove or other heat sources is ideal. Remember, heat, light and air can all contribute to the oil turning rancid more quickly.
• Once opened, tighten the cap after each use to limit the oil's exposure to air.
• If you do not use macadamia oil frequently, consider purchasing in smaller quantities to ensure it's always fresh.
• Although not common, you can refrigerate or freeze macadamia oil to extend its shelf life. If you decide to freeze it, remember to defrost it at room temperature and shake it well before use.
