Expiration & Storage Tips
When does ghee expire?
Unopened ghee can last one to two years in a cool, dry pantry. Once opened, it should be used within a year. Refrigeration isn't necessary (unless you live in a very hot climate) due to ghee's low moisture content. If properly stored, ghee can even last beyond the printed expiration date. You can also freeze ghee in an air-tight container for up to a year.
How do you tell if ghee is bad?
The best way to tell if ghee has gone bad is to sniff it. If it has a sour, off smell, it’s probably spoiled. Also, check the color: ghee should be golden or amber, and any sign of mold or moisture indicates it's no longer safe to consume. The texture should also be firm but scoop-able. If it's runny or liquid, it could indicate spoilage.
Tips for storing ghee to extend shelf life
• Keep ghee in an airtight container.
• Store it at room temperature in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat.
• Use a clean, dry spoon to scoop out ghee to avoid introducing moisture.
• Do not mix old and new ghee together. This could introduce bacteria and cause the ghee to spoil faster.
• If you live in a hot climate, consider storing ghee in the refrigerator to maintain its solid form and prevent rancidity.
