Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Cauliflower Mash expire?
Fresh cauliflower mash, once prepared, can last up to 3-5 days in the refrigerator. If you've bought a pre-packaged, unopened version from the supermarket, it can usually last up to a week unopened, or a few days past its expiration date, but always check the 'best before' date. If you've opened the pack but haven't finished it off, aim to consume it within 2 days. As for freezing, cauliflower mash freezes quite well. Stored in airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, it can last up to 10-12 months in the freezer.
How do you tell if Cauliflower Mash is bad?
If your cauliflower mash has gone bad or is starting to go bad, it will typically show noticeable deteriorations. First, you might smell a strong, pungent, or sour aroma. The texture may become slimy or unusually moist. With regards to color, if your mash has a grayish-brown or dark color alteration, chances are it's time to throw it away.
Tips for storing Cauliflower Mash to extend shelf life
• Always store cauliflower mash in airtight containers, as exposure to air can accelerate spoilage.
• When storing in the refrigerator, place it in the coolest part, not on the door shelves, as the temperature fluctuates there more.
• If freezing, store in portion-sized containers - this not only makes it easier to thaw the exact amount you need, but also prevents thawing and refreezing which can deteriorate quality.
• Always thaw frozen cauliflower mash in the fridge and not at room temperature, to avoid bacterial buildup.
• Lastly, remember the principle 'first in, first out' to rotate your food and avoid wastage.
