Expiration & Storage Tips
When does ground beef expire?
Unopened ground beef can last in the fridge for 1-2 days past the printed sell-by date. Once it is opened, it should be used within 1-2 days. In the freezer, ground beef can last up to 3-4 months for the best quality but it remains safe forever if kept at 0°F.
How do you tell if ground beef is bad?
Ground beef that has gone bad will have a spoiled odor and may feel slimy to the touch. It might also change in color, turning gray or brown rather than the typical red. If the ground beef shows any of these signs or if you have any doubt about its freshness, it's best to err on the side of caution and discard it.
Tips for storing ground beef to extend shelf life
• Always store ground beef in the refrigerator or freezer right after purchasing.
• If you won't be using the meat immediately, freeze it. You can use a vacuum sealer or a freezer bag to keep it fresher for longer periods.
• When freezing ground beef, separate it into meal-sized portions to make defrosting easier.
• Always thaw frozen ground beef in the refrigerator, not at room temperature. This keeps the meat out of the ‘danger zone' (between 40°F and 140°F) and helps prevent bacterial growth.
• Once defrosted, don't refreeze raw ground beef. It's better to cook it first and then freeze the cooked dish if necessary.
