Expiration & Storage Tips
When does almond meal expire?
Unopened almond meal expiration depends on the best-by date on the package, typically 1 to 2 years from the date of production. After opening, it should be consumed within 3 to 4 months. For homemade almond meal, it's recommended to use it within a week. If you've decided to freeze it, it can last up to 6 months if stored properly.
How do you tell if almond meal is bad?
When almond meal has gone bad, it will have a rancid smell that's quite distinctive. It may also develop an off-taste similar to sour, old nuts. In some cases, it may appear yellowish or have tiny clumps, which is a sign of mold growth. If it shows any of these signs, it's time to throw it out!
Tips for storing almond meal to extend shelf life
• Always store almond meal in an airtight container, preferably in a dark and cool place.
• If you've opened the almond meal, it's best to store it in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life.
• For even longer storage, you can freeze almond meal. Place it in a sealed bag, remove as much air as possible before sealing it, and then put it in the freezer.
• When defrosting, leave it in the refrigerator overnight. Do not leave it to defrost at room temperature to avoid accumulation of moisture, which can lead to mold growth.
• If you grind your own almonds, only make as much meal as you’ll use within a week to ensure maximum freshness.
