Expiration & Storage Tips
When does orzo expire?
In terms of expiration, dry orzo if unopened, it can last up to 3 years in your pantry. It can even go beyond this date, as long as it's stored properly and does not show any signs of spoilage. The date on the package is usually just a 'best before' date, not an expiration date. Once you've opened your orzo package, it's best to use it within 1 year. If you've cooked your orzo, it's good for 3 to 5 days in the fridge. Now, if you decide to freeze your cooked orzo, it can last up to 3 months.
How do you tell if orzo is bad?
Check if your orzo has gone bad by examining its appearance and smell. If your dry orzo has any visible mold or pests, discard it immediately. Also, if the orzo develops an off smell, you'll want to toss it. Now, for cooked orzo, if it has been in your fridge for longer than 5 days or it has any signs of mold, it's time to let it go. This applies to frozen orzo as well; if it has been in your freezer for longer than 3 months or exhibits any signs of freezer burn, it would be best to discard it.
Tips for storing orzo to extend shelf life
• Always seal dry orzo tightly in its original packaging or a clean, airtight container to protect it from pests.
• Store your dry orzo in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard.
• For cooked orzo, wait for it to cool before storing it in the fridge. You can place it in a shallow, air-tight container or wrap it securely with aluminium foil or plastic wrap.
• If you're freezing cooked orzo, spread it out on a baking tray to freeze it in single layer first before transferring to a freezer-safe bag or container. This helps to prevent it from clumping together and makes for easier portion control.
• Label your container or bag with the date when you cooked and started storing your orzo. This helps you track how long it's been stored and avoid consuming it beyond its ideal storage period.
