Expiration & Storage Tips
When does pearl couscous expire?
Unopened pearl couscous can be stored in a cool, dry place and generally lasts for two years from the manufacture date encoded on the package. Once opened, pearl couscous should be used within six months, regardless of whether or not you've consumed some of it. However, when properly and continuously stored in a cool, dry environment, you can safely use pearl couscous within a year of opening. If frozen, it should be consumed within 3 months for best texture, though it is not commonly frozen due to its long shelf life.
How do you tell if pearl couscous is bad?
Smell and visual examination are your best tools to determine if pearl couscous has gone bad. Look for changes in color or texture, like mold or pests, which indicate the product should not be used. If it smells rancid or off, it most likely has gone bad. Bugs in your couscous are another clear sign it's time to throw it out.
Tips for storing pearl couscous to extend shelf life
• Store unopened pearl couscous in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Think a pantry or a cupboard away from the stove or oven.
• Once opened, keep pearl couscous in an airtight container to keep it fresh and avoid attracting pests.
• Do not keep pearl couscous in high moisture areas like under the sink or next to the dishwasher, as this can expedite the spoiling process.
• Consider writing the date you opened the package on the container to keep track of how long it's been in use.
