Expiration & Storage Tips
When does cherry jam expire?
Commercially packaged cherry jam can last up to a year unopened in a cool, dark pantry, thanks to the high sugar content. Its expiration date on the packaging should give a good indication. Once opened, it will maintain good quality in the refrigerator for about a month. If you've cooked up some homemade cherry jam, expect it to last in the fridge for about two weeks. Can you freeze cherry jam? Absolutely! Both store-bought and homemade jam can be kept in the freezer for up to a year.
How do you tell if cherry jam is bad?
Have a look, take a sniff and a small taste. If you notice any visible mold, definitely discard it. If the color has darkened significantly, that might be a sign of bacterial growth as well. Smelling an off, fermented odor, or tasting a tanginess that goes beyond the normal tartness of cherries should also be your cue to throw it out.
Tips for storing cherry jam to extend shelf life
• Always use a clean, dry spoon for serving to avoid introducing bacteria or moisture.
• Keep the lid tightly closed when not in use to prevent exposure to air.
• For longer storage, consider freezing the jam. Just remember to leave space in the container for expansion as it freezes.
• If you made homemade jam, consider canning it in sterilized, heat-resistant jars.
