Expiration & Storage Tips
When does wheat berries expire?
Unopened wheat berries can last up to a year from the date of packaging if stored in a cool, dry place. Once the packaging is opened, the lovely wheat berries should be consumed within 6 months to remain fresh. If in an airtight container, you can also store them in the freezer for up to 6 months beyond this time. Precooked wheat berries kept in the refrigerator will last for approximately 3-5 days.
How do you tell if wheat berries is bad?
Rancidity is the major concern with wheat berries. A quick sniff test can tell you a lot - if the wheat berries have a stale, bitter or off smell, they've probably gone rancid. The wheat berries may also turn a darker color and could potentially grow mold if exposed to moisture - these are clear indicators to dispose of your wheat berries.
Tips for storing wheat berries to extend shelf life
• Always store wheat berries in a cool, dry and dark place to maintain their freshness longer.
• After opening the package, transfer the remaining wheat berries to an airtight container or resealable plastic bag to prevent unwanted moisture and pests.
• For long-term storage, consider storing wheat berries in your freezer. They will not freeze solid and can be used directly from the freezer in your recipes.
• For safe refrigeration of cooked wheat berries, store them in a shallow, covered container to encourage rapid, even cooling. Always keep them at or below 40°F.
