Expiration & Storage Tips
When does bulgur expire?
Unopened bulgur can last for up to 2 years if stored in cool, dry conditions. However, always check the best before date printed on the package for a more precise estimate. Once you've opened the package, it is best to use bulgur within 6 months. You're unlikely to find bulgur in the freezer section of the grocery store, however, you can extend its shelf life by storing it in an airtight container and keeping it in the freezer where it will remain good for up to one year
How do you tell if bulgur is bad?
Determining whether bulgur is past its prime can be tricky for kitchen novices, but worry not. Watch out for changes in the grain's color, typically it turns a darker shade accompanied by a musty smell. If you noticed bugs or other infestation, discard it immediately. And when in doubt, always remember the golden rule: when unsure, better safe than sorry!
Tips for storing bulgur to extend shelf life
• Store bulgur in an airtight container to prevent moisture intrusion and to keep out pests.
• Keep your bulgur in cool, dark, and dry places. Pantry or kitchen cabinets away from direct sunlight and sources of heat are ideal.
• For long-term storage, it's fine to put bulgur in the freezer. Before use, just give it a few hours to thaw at room temperature.
• Never use wet utensils when scooping out your bulgur from its container as moisture will encourage mold growth.
• Label your containers with the date of opening. This way, you can easily keep track of its quality.
