Expiration & Storage Tips
When does turkey sausage expire?
Unopened packaged turkey sausage generally lasts about one to two weeks in the fridge. Check the 'use by' date on the packaging, but remember best before dates are about quality and not safety. Once you've opened the package, it's best to use the sausage within 3-4 days. Homemade sausage, although fresh, will not last as long and usually needs to be used within a day or two. If you've frozen your turkey sausage, it will routinely last around 1-2 months. After this time, it won't necessarily be unsafe, but the quality and texture may start to deteriorate.
How do you tell if turkey sausage is bad?
The easiest way to check if turkey sausage is bad is through its smell. If turkey sausage has a sour, acidic, or putrid odor, it has likely spoiled and should not be eaten. Don't be fooled by color since turkey can naturally darken the longer it is kept. Always trust your nose and if it smells off, throw it out! Other signs to look out for include a slimy or sticky texture and if you see any mold or other abnormal growths on the surface, discard it immediately.
Tips for storing turkey sausage to extend shelf life
• Do not leave turkey sausage at room temperature for more than two hours.
• Wrap opened sausage tightly in cling film or foil and store in the fridge.
• For longer storage, consider freezing the sausage. Divide into portion sizes, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and freeze. It is important to completely seal the package to prevent freezer burn.
• Defrost frozen sausage by moving it from the freezer to the fridge, allowing it to thaw safely over a period of 24 hours before cooking.
• Avoid refreezing thawed turkey sausage as it can negatively affect the texture and flavor.
