Expiration & Storage Tips
When does stewed tomato expire?
Unopened, commercially packaged stewed tomatoes can usually last 12 to 18 months beyond their printed 'Best by' date when stored in a pantry. Once opened, these should be consumed within 5 to 7 days if refrigerated, and up to 6 months if promptly frozen. Homemade stewed tomatoes typically last 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator and 2 to 3 months if frozen.
How do you tell if stewed tomato is bad?
Check for signs like foul smell, an off color (such as a dull or dark appearance), a bulging can (if unopened), mold growth, a slimy texture, or an unusually sour or bitter taste. If any such sign is detected, it's safer to discard them, as they may harbor harmful bacteria and molds.
Tips for storing stewed tomato to extend shelf life
• Keep the unopened canned tomatoes in a cool, dark and dry pantry, away from heat sources.
• After opening, immediately transfer the remaining stewed tomatoes to a glass or plastic container, cover it tightly and store in the fridge.
• For longer storage, freeze opened stewed tomatoes in air-tight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags.
• Leaving a small air-space in the freezing container helps to accommodate expansion on freezing.
• To use the frozen ones, defrost them in the refrigerator for a day or warm them directly in a cooking dish over the stove, stirring occasionally.
