Expiration & Storage Tips
When does pork sausage expire?
Typically, pork sausages last for about one to two weeks in the fridge if unopened, with its ‘use-by’ date as a guide. Make sure to check that date as it is the most reliable indicator. Once the package is opened, the sausage is safe to eat for another week, but always use your judgment if it seems off. The freezer extends its life quite a bit; uncooked pork sausage can be frozen for around 1-2 months, while cooked sausage will be good for about 2-3 months in freezer. Once defrosted, eat within 24 hours and do not refreeze.
How do you tell if pork sausage is bad?
Since our eyes and nose are the best tools here, look for any changes in color. Fresh pork sausage has a pinkish color, if it's turning gray or brown, it’s a sign that it has gone bad. Also, the texture of the sausage changes over time, it might become slimy or sticky which is not a good sign. Always give your sausage a good sniff. If it smells off, rancid or sour, it's time to part ways. Remember, when in doubt, throw it out.
Tips for storing pork sausage to extend shelf life
• Always store your pork sausage in the refrigerator or freezer as soon as possible after purchase.
• For longer storage, freeze sausages, either in their original packaging or repacked in airtight containers or freezer bags to prevent freezer burns.
• If you need to defrost frozen sausages, it's best to do so in the refrigerator, which keeps it at a safe temperature. Always reheat thoroughly before eating.
• Cooked sausages can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Just like raw sausages, reheat thoroughly before eating.
