Expiration & Storage Tips
When does light coconut milk expire?
Unopened cans of light coconut milk can last for up to two to five years at room temperature if stored in a cool, dry place. However, once opened, light coconut milk has to be refrigerated and is good for about 4-6 days. If you've frozen the coconut milk, it can last for several months but might experience a change in texture when defrosted.
How do you tell if light coconut milk is bad?
First, take a whiff. If it smells sour, off, or too much like coconut oil, it's probably bad. Next, check the appearance. Coconut milk gone bad will have a thick, lumpy texture and might start turning dark or pink. If you're still unsure, take a small sip. Spoiled coconut milk will taste metallic, sour, or off-putting in some other way. If any of these signs occur, it's safe to say the coconut milk has gone bad.
Tips for storing light coconut milk to extend shelf life
• Store unopened cans of light coconut milk in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
• Once opened, transfer any unused coconut milk into an airtight container and refrigerate immediately. Be sure to use it up within 4-6 days.
• You can freeze leftover coconut milk in ice cube trays for easy portioning. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a freezer-safe container or bag. Just remember that the texture might change upon defrosting, but it's still good for cooking or blending into smoothies.
• Consider your usage: smaller cans or containers of light coconut milk might be better if you don’t think you’ll use a large can within a week.
• Do not store opened coconut milk cans in the fridge, as the metal can impart a metallic taste or cause the milk to absorb odors from other food.
