Expiration & Storage Tips
When does gruyere cheese expire?
Unopened Gruyère cheese in the original vacuum sealed packaging can last 2-4 months from the printed date on the package. Once opened, it's good for about 5-7 weeks when stored in the refrigerator. If you want to further extend its shelf life, you can freeze Gruyère cheese for up to 6 months. Do remember, however, that the texture of the cheese might change slightly after freezing.
How do you tell if gruyere cheese is bad?
It's always important to check for signs of spoilage before consuming food. For Gruyère cheese, signs of spoiling include a rancid smell (it should typically have a nutty, sweet aroma), changes in color (which may indicate the growth of mold), or a very hard texture. Be cautious with any cheese that has developed an overly strong, sharp, or sour smell.
Tips for storing gruyere cheese to extend shelf life
• Always store your Gruyère cheese in the refrigerator, ideally between 35°F and 40°F, which is the ideal temperature for preserving cheese.
• Once opened, store your cheese in airtight containers or wrap tightly in plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out. You can also use wax or parchment paper.
• To freeze Gruyère cheese, cut it into small, manageable pieces, no more than a half pound each. Then tightly wrap these in plastic wrap and put them in a zip-top freezer bag. Remove air from the bag before sealing, label with the date, then freeze.
• When you're ready to thaw your cheese, move it from the freezer to the refrigerator and let it slowly defrost for at least 24 hours before using.
