Expiration & Storage Tips
When does dried dill expire?
Unopened dried dill can last up to 1-3 years beyond the printed date, while opened packages should be used within 1-2 years for the best flavor. However, it can be safe to consume long after. Just keep in mind the flavor intensity will wane over time. If it's stored in a spice jar it can last from 1 to 3 years. It's not recommended to freeze dried dill as it will not improve the shelf life or flavor.
How do you tell if dried dill is bad?
While dried dill won't really go 'bad' under normal, dry storage conditions, it can certainly lose potency and flavor. To check if your dried dill still holds its flair, smell it - it should have a strong, slightly sweet aroma. If the fragrance is faint or non-existent, or even if the color has faded significantly, it's time to replace it. Another good test is to crush a little on your fingers - if the herb still gives off a fresh, dill aroma, it's still good to use. If not, toss it!
Tips for storing dried dill to extend shelf life
To properly store dried dill and enhance its shelf life, follow these tips:
• Keep it in a cool, dry, and dark place. Exposing dried dill to heat, air, and light will hasten the loss of its flavor and aroma.
• Storing dried dill in an airtight container will help maintain its freshness longer. The less air reaching your dried dill, the longer it will retain its potency.
• Avoid sprinkling dried dill directly from its container into a pot of steaming soup or stew. The steam can get into the container and hasten loss of flavor and increase the risk of mold.
• Try not to use a wet spoon to measure out dried dill for use, as introducing moisture can lead to faster spoilage.
• Don’t forget to close the lid of the container or jar tightly after use.
• Keep track of when you bought your dried dill and try to use it within the best-by timeframe to enjoy it at its best!
