Expiration & Storage Tips
When does dried thyme expire?
Dried thyme, when stored properly, can last between 1 to 3 years beyond the 'best by' date printed on the container. Unopened dried thyme can typically retain its quality for about 3 to 4 years. Once the container has been opened, it's best to use the dried thyme within 1 to 2 years for optimal flavor. The freezing of dried thyme is not a common practice, but if you choose to do so, it can extend the shelf life up to a few additional years.
How do you tell if dried thyme is bad?
Inspect your dried thyme carefully for changes in color, smell or texture. When it's close to spoiling, its color becomes faded or grayish, and its typically vibrant aroma diminishes. Also, it will lose its flavor potency, tasting weak or dusty. Presence of mold or bugs is a clear sign of contamination and the thyme should be discarded immediately.
Tips for storing dried thyme to extend shelf life
• Store in a cool, dry and dark place, like a pantry or drawer.
• Keeping the dried thyme in an airtight container helps prevent flavor loss over time.
• Avoid storing near heat sources (like the stove or oven) or areas of direct sunlight as this can cause the herb to lose flavor more rapidly.
• Don't use your hand to scoop directly from the container as it introduces moisture and reduces the shelf life.
• Consider labeling the container with the purchase or opening date to monitor its age.
