Expiration & Storage Tips
When does whole wheat pasta expire?
Whole wheat pasta is sturdy and has a long shelf life. Unopened, it can last up to 3 years past the printed date on the package, due to its dry condition and often airtight packaging which keeps it safe from bacteria. Once it’s been opened, we recommend using it within 1-2 years for the best quality. Whole wheat pasta from your homemade recipes is best consumed within a week. If stored properly in a freezer, it can last up to 2-3 months.
How do you tell if whole wheat pasta is bad?
You'll know your whole wheat pasta has gone bad if it starts to smell off or sour, or if it has developed mold, which may appear as green, white or black spots. For cooked pasta, it may also feel slimy to the touch. Always trust your senses when it comes to determining food freshness.
Tips for storing whole wheat pasta to extend shelf life
• Always store unopened whole wheat pasta in a cool, dry place, like a pantry or cabinet
• After you open the box, transfer any leftover dried pasta to an airtight container to prevent moisture and insects getting in
• To freeze cooked whole wheat pasta, let it cool completely, then add to airtight containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, leaving a little space for expansion
• To defrost frozen pasta, you can simply add it to boiling water or sauce and cook until it's hot, or defrost it in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight
