Expiration & Storage Tips
When does mahi mahi expire?
An unopened, store bought packet of mahi mahi lasts for about 1-2 days beyond the 'sell by' date if refrigerated, but can be safely consumed up to 6-9 months if immediately frozen. Once you have opened the packet, it's best to consume it within 1-2 days if kept refrigerated. If the mahi mahi is homemade or leftover from a meal, it should be eaten within 3-4 days when refrigerated. Frozen mahi mahi, when properly sealed, can be eaten safely for up to 9 months.
How do you tell if mahi mahi is bad?
If your mahi mahi has gone bad, the first sign is a strong, fishy odor. Fresh mahi mahi should have a mild ocean-like scent. A pungent smell is a clear indication that the fish has spoiled. Additionally, check the fish's texture. If the meat has become slimy or sticky, it's time to toss it out. Discoloration is another sign; fresh mahi mahi is light pink or peachy. If the color darkens or the fish becomes dull, don't consume it.
Tips for storing mahi mahi to extend shelf life
• Store fresh mahi mahi in the fridge at a temperature lower than 40°F (4°C) as soon as you get home. Don't leave it out at room temperature for more than two hours.
• If you won't use it within two days, wrap it securely in foil or plastic freezer wrap, or place it in a freezer bag to prevent freezer burn.
• Avoid placing raw fish above ready-to-eat foods in the refrigerator to avoid cross-contamination.
• If you've cooked the mahi mahi, transfer the leftovers to covered airtight containers as soon as they’ve cooled down and store them in your refrigerator.
