Expiration & Storage Tips
When does halibut expire?
Unopened or whole Halibut can last in the fridge for 1-2 days. However, if you bought the fish from the store and it was already chilled, it's best to cook it the same day. Once cooked, halibut should be eaten within 3-4 days. If you freeze it, it can last up to 2-3 months.
How do you tell if halibut is bad?
Poor smell is your first indicator that fish like Halibut might be bad. It should not have a strong, fishy odor, but instead, it should smell fresh and light, often like the ocean. If it smells ammonia-like or sour, it's bad. Another clear sign of spoiled fish is a slimy, milky residue on the surface and a change in color to yellow or dull gray. If you're still uncertain, a small taste will instantly tell if it's gone bad as it will taste extremely sour or unpleasant.
Tips for storing halibut to extend shelf life
• Always store fresh Halibut in the coldest part of your refrigerator immediately after you bring it home from the grocery store.
• To maximize shelf-life, keep it in its original packaging until ready to use.
• If you buy Halibut fillets, store them in airtight bags or containers before refrigerating.
• If freezing, make sure to wrap your fish tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, then place inside a freezer bag to prevent freezer burn.
• Always thaw frozen Halibut in the fridge, not at room temperature, or in the microwave, to maintain its texture and flavor.
