Expiration & Storage Tips
When does corn tortilla expire?
Unopened, corn tortillas can last up to a month past the printed date on the package if stored in a pantry at room temperature. Once opened, their lifespan reduces significantly - usually to about a 7-10 days in the pantry. However, extending the shelf life is definitely possible by storing them in the refrigerator, where they can last for an additional 6-8 weeks. If frozen, corn tortillas can last up to 6-8 months. To defrost, transfer them to the fridge 24 hours before usage or defrost them in a microwave if needed immediately.
How do you tell if corn tortilla is bad?
Corn tortillas are relatively easy to tell when they go bad. They will become dry and brittle, losing their pliability and moisture. They may also develop a sour or off smell. Check for discoloration or moldy spots - this is a clear sign that the tortilla has spoiled and should not be consumed.
Tips for storing corn tortilla to extend shelf life
• Store corn tortillas in a cool, dry pantry for short-term storage
• For longer shelf life, refrigerate them in a sealed plastic bag. Ensure you press out the air before sealing to prevent them from drying out
• If you buy in bulk or have leftovers, freezing is a sensible option. To freeze, separate each tortilla with parchment paper or a plastic wrap to prevent them from freezing together
• Always rewrap the tortillas after using to maintain their freshness
