Expiration & Storage Tips
When does clam juice expire?
In an unopened can or jar, clam juice will typically last for 1-2 years past the printed date on the package if stored correctly, but always check the best by date. Once opened, clam juice needs to be refrigerated and should be used within 7-10 days. As for the frozen variety, you can keep clam juice in the freezer for up to 3 months before the texture and taste will start to change significantly.
How do you tell if clam juice is bad?
Rancid or off smells are the fastest way to tell if your clam juice has gone bad. The smell should be fresh and reminiscent of the ocean, not off-putting in any way. If the color has darkened significantly or if the liquid appears murky, it may have spoiled. And of course, if you notice any mold or foreign objects in the juice, it's time to throw it out.
Tips for storing clam juice to extend shelf life
• Keep unopened clam juice in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard. Avoid storing near heat or moisture.
• After opening, be sure to seal it tightly and store it in the refrigerator. Try to use the opened juice within a week of opening it for best flavor.
• If you've bought too much clam juice and want to save some for later, you can pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze it. This makes it super easy to add a little bit of extra flavor to your dishes later on.
• Always check the color, smell, and if possible, taste of the clam juice before using it in a recipe to ensure it's still good to use.
