Expiration & Storage Tips
When does rib eye steak expire?
When stored in the refrigerator, your unopened rib eye steak can last up to 5 days beyond the printed sell-by date on the package. Once the steak has been opened from its packaging, it is safe to consume within 3-5 days when stored in the refrigerator. If you decide to freeze your rib eye steak, uncooked, it can remain good for up to 12 months. When defrosting, its best to do so in the refrigerator for approximately 24 hours for every 5 pounds of meat.
How do you tell if rib eye steak is bad?
Detecting if your rib eye steak has gone bad can be done by observing a few key signs. If the steak has developed a slimy or sticky texture or has a smell that is sour or putrid, it has likely gone bad. Also, any visible mold or discoloration, such as gray spots or a dull brown color, are signs of spoilage.
Tips for storing rib eye steak to extend shelf life
• Store your rib eye steak in the coldest part of your refrigerator, ideally at or below 40°F.
• Once opened, if not consuming immediately, wrap your steak tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil before placing it back in the fridge. This helps prevent air exposure.
• For longer storage, consider vacuum sealing your steak before freezing to preserve freshness.
• Never refreeze a steak that has completely thawed.
• Before cooking a defrosted steak, let it sit out on the counter for about 20 minutes to reach room temperature. This will result in more even cooking.
