Expiration & Storage Tips
When does american cheese expire?
American cheese typically has a shelf life ranging from a couple of weeks to several months, depending on how it's stored. Unopened, it can often last 2-3 months past its 'sell by' date if it's kept in the fridge. Once opened, it's good for about 2 weeks if stored properly. If you decide to freeze it, it can extend the shelf life to 6 months. However, take note that the texture may change after defrosting and it's best used in cooked dishes.
How do you tell if american cheese is bad?
American cheese that has gone bad typically displays some clear signs. If you notice a sour smell, that's a clear indicator it has spoiled. In addition, watch out for changes in color. If your cheese turns a shade of deep yellow or even brown, it's time to throw it out. Similarly, if you see mold or other growths, don't hesitate to discard the cheese.
Tips for storing american cheese to extend shelf life
• Store your cheese in the refrigerator's dairy compartment which has the optimal temperature and humidity
• For opened packages, re-wrap the cheese in wax or parchment paper, then loosely wrap it in aluminum foil or put in a zip-top plastic bag to avoid the cheese drying out
• If freezing, slice the cheese first - it's much easier to portion out into meals when needed
• Remember to thaw your frozen cheese slowly in the refrigerator for a day or two before use to maintain its texture and flavor better
