Expiration & Storage Tips
When does curly parsley expire?
Curly parsley generally stays fresh up to 7-10 days when refrigerated. This can vary somewhat based on its source and how it has been handled before you purchased it. Once removed from the fridge, parsley will start to wilt quickly, usually within a day. If it's frozen, expect it to last a few weeks, but it may lose some of its texture and flavor over time. If it’s homemade dried parsley, it can last up to a year.
How do you tell if curly parsley is bad?
Curly parsley has gone bad when it turns a darker, yellowish-green or brown color, and the leaves are no longer firm but wilted and slimy. Its scent may also change, becoming less fresh and slightly musty. Mold, a significant change in color, or a pungent smell is a clear indication that your parsley has gone bad and should not be used.
Tips for storing curly parsley to extend shelf life
• Always wash the parsley before storing it.
• Scroll and wrap them loosely in a paper towel to absorb any excess moisture.
• Store the wrapped parsley in a zip-lock plastic bag in the refrigerator; that way, it can breathe without getting too much moisture.
• If you don’t plan to use it shortly, freezing is a viable option. Alternatively, chop up the parsley and freeze in an airtight container.
• To thaw, just remove a portion of it from the freezer half an hour before using it, or use the 'defrost' setting on your microwave.
