Expiration & Storage Tips
When does brown rice expire?
Unopened brown rice typically lasts for 6 to 8 months beyond the printed date on the package under ideal storage conditions. However, once opened, the expiry time decreases to 3 to 6 months if stored correctly at home. Yes, you can freeze brown rice! If frozen, it can last for 12 to 18 months.
How do you tell if brown rice is bad?
With brown rice, indications of spoilage are fairly easy to spot. First, check the color. If there are discolorations or dark spots, it might be a sign of mold. Next, smell it. If there's a rancid or off odor, it has likely turned bad. Finally, if you taste a small bite and it has a bitter or unpleasant flavor, it's best to toss it out. Keep in mind, too, that storing brown rice in a humid environment can introduce bugs, so keep an eye out for any bugs or larvae!
Tips for storing brown rice to extend shelf life
• Keep brown rice stored in a cool, dry place away from heat and light.
• Once you've opened the bag, make sure to fold the top securely or store the rice in a sealed container to protect it from moisture and pests.
• For longer shelf life, seal it tightly and store it in the freezer. Remember to allow it to come back to room temperature before cooking.
• If you've cooked the brown rice but have leftovers you'd like to save, let it cool down before storing it in an airtight container in the fridge. It should be used within a few days.
