Expiration & Storage Tips
When does rice mix expire?
Rice mixes typically have a shelf life of about 12 to 18 months unopened, which can often be extended by a few months if stored properly. Do keep in mind that this is provided the 'Best by' date has not passed. The 'Best by' date printed on the package will give you the most accurate guideline. Once opened, rice mix should be used ideally within a month. Home making a rice mix isn't typically a common practice, but if done, it can last for about a week provided it has been stored properly. Freezing rice mix isn't commonly done but if you choose to do so, it can stay good for about a month.
How do you tell if rice mix is bad?
If you notice changes in the color, smell or texture, it might be a sign the rice mix has gone bad. Look out for any signs of mold, discoloration or an off-smell. Also, check for any signs of insects, as they can be attracted to rice mix.
Tips for storing rice mix to extend shelf life
• Store unopened rice mix in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, like a cupboard or pantry.
• Once opened, store it in an airtight container to prevent moisture or pests getting in.
• If you've made a rice mix from scratch, make sure to refrigerate it in a sealed container.
• While not typical, if you wish to freeze rice mix, place it in a Freezer-safe bag or container. To defrost, transfer to the fridge overnight.
