Expiration & Storage Tips
When does Gazpacho expire?
Gazpacho is a cold soup, and like other prepared foods, it has a relatively short timeframe to expiration especially once opened. An unopened, store-bought gazpacho typically lasts about 1-2 weeks past the printed date on the package if kept chilled in the refrigerator. Once opened, however, you should eat it within 3-5 days. If you've made homemade gazpacho, treat it similarly to the opened store-bought version, aiming to consume it within 3-4 days. As for freezing, gazpacho can indeed be frozen to extend its shelf life up to 4-6 months. Be aware though that it may lose some of its freshness during this time.
How do you tell if Gazpacho is bad?
The signs of spoiled gazpacho can be similar to other soups. First, if you see any mold or discolored spots, your gazpacho has definitely gone bad. Also, a change in smell from fresh and flavorful to sour or unpleasantly pungent is a clear indicator. In terms of texture, if gazpacho has thickened considerably or developed a slimy consistency, this could be a sign of spoilage. When in doubt, always better to be safe than sorry and discard it.
Tips for storing Gazpacho to extend shelf life
• Always keep your gazpacho in a refrigerator, homemade or store-bought.
• If you're planning to keep it for a while, freezing is your best bet. Just remember to leave some space in the container for the gazpacho to expand as it freezes.
• For best results when defrosting, transfer the gazpacho from the freezer to the refrigerator 24 hours before you plan to consume it.
• To maintain the freshness of homemade gazpacho, consider adding a squeeze of lemon or lime juice.
• Always use clean utensils when serving to avoid introducing bacteria into the gazpacho.
