Expiration & Storage Tips
When does tortilla expire?
An unopened package of tortillas will typically last until the printed date on the package, usually a few months from the purchase date if stored in a cool and dry place. Once opened, tortillas will generally stay at their best for about a week kept at room temperature, or up to three weeks when refrigerated. If you decide to freeze your tortillas, they can last up to 6 months. After thawing, frozen tortillas should be consumed within 2-3 days.
How do you tell if tortilla is bad?
Check your tortillas for signs of mold, such as visible spots or a funky smell. Beyond that, stale tortillas have a hard texture and won't bend easily. Additionally, if you see any discoloration or growth on the tortillas, those are definite signs the tortillas have gone bad.
Tips for storing tortilla to extend shelf life
• Always reseal the tortilla package tightly after use to prevent air exposure.
• Store your opened tortilla package in the refrigerator to prolong its shelf life. Keep it in the original packaging, or in a zip-top bag with as much air removed as possible.
• For even longer storage, you can freeze tortillas. Separate individual tortillas with parchment paper to prevent them from sticking together, and place them in an air-tight bag before freezing. To defrost, leave the tortillas at room temperature or, for a quicker method, warm them up directly in a dry heated pan.
• Try not to stock up on more tortillas than you can consume within their shelf life to avoid waste.
