How do you tell if lowfat plain greek yogurt is bad?
Yogurt can go bad just like any other dairy product. You can tell if Greek yogurt has gone bad by looking at it closely and smelling it. If you see any mold growth on the surface, toss it out immediately. A sour or off smell is also a sign that the yogurt has turned. The product can also give off excessive whey (the clear liquid on the top) which signals the beginning of the spoilage process.
Tips for storing lowfat plain greek yogurt to extend shelf life
• Always store yogurt in the refrigerator at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
• When storing, make sure the yogurt is kept in its original container tightly sealed to block out harmful bacteria.
• Prefer smaller containers over larger ones. Once you open the tub, freshness decreases very quickly. If the small portion-size containers are not on sale, you can buy a large tub and divide into smaller pots at home, storing separately in the fridge.
• If freezing the yogurt for longer shelf life, be sure to leave some extra space in the freezer-safe container as yogurt tends to expand upon freezing.
• To defrost frozen Greek yogurt, transfer it to the fridge and allow it to thaw slowly. Better yet, leave it in the fridge overnight. Keep in mind though, that after defrosting, the texture can alter, so it’s best to use defrosted yogurt for baking or cooking rather than eating it plain.
