Expiration & Storage Tips
When does whole clove expire?
Whole cloves can last for up to 3-4 years if stored properly. This lifespan stays true regardless of the printed date on the package. Once the package is opened, the shelf life remains the same as long as they're stored properly, in a dark and cool place. They don't need to be refrigerated or frozen. In fact, freezing can result in loss of potency in the flavorful oils present in cloves.
How do you tell if whole clove is bad?
To determine if whole cloves have gone bad, first take a good look at them. They should retain their deep brown color and hard texture. If they appear dull, discolored, or brittle, they might have lost their potency. You can also take a whiff: good cloves should emit a strong, sweet, and slightly spicy aroma. If there isn't any smell, or if they smell stale or off in any way, it's best to discard them. Lastly, you can taste a clove (be ready for a strong flavor). If it's not intensely aromatic and flavorful, it's likely past its prime.
Tips for storing whole clove to extend shelf life
• Keep whole cloves in an airtight container.
• Store them in a cool, dry, and dark place. Avoid areas with high humidity or heat as these conditions can speed up the loss of essential oils and decrease potency and flavor.
• It's best to buy whole cloves and grind them as needed to retain maximum flavor and aroma.
• Do not refrigerate or freeze cloves as this can result in a loss of their aromatic oils.
