Expiration & Storage Tips
When does whole cumin seed expire?
Unopened whole cumin seeds can last up to three to four years under ideal storage conditions, as they don't get spoiled easily. Use the smell and color to gauge the freshness, as they lose their scent and turn a more faded color over time. Once opened, a good quality packet of cumin seeds can easily last 2 to 3 years if stored correctly. When frozen, whole cumin seeds can last indefinitely, although quality decreases after about two years.
How do you tell if whole cumin seed is bad?
Cumin seeds don't typically grow molds or get infested with bugs. The best way to determine their usability is to smell them. Fresh cumin seeds have a strong, warm, and distinctive scent. If the seeds smell light or have lost their aroma, this might indicate their freshness has diminished. Visually, dull or faded seeds also suggest that they might be past their prime. You can also taste a seed for a final check, if it is flavorless, it's best to replace it.
Tips for storing whole cumin seed to extend shelf life
• Store cumin seeds in a cool, dry and dark place away from direct light and heat to extend their shelf life.
• Use airtight containers for storing. Exposure to air leads to loss of essential oils resulting in decreased flavor and aroma.
• It's best to store cumin seeds whole and grind when needed, as ground cumin loses its potency faster.
• If you have bought cumin seeds in bulk, consider freezing part of it to preserve its flavor. Ensure it's packed in an airtight bag or container to avoid freezer burn. Note that there's no need to defrost prior to use, they can be used directly from the freezer.
