Expiration & Storage Tips
When does minced garlic expire?
Unopened store-bought minced garlic can last up to 18 months in a cool, dark, dry place like a pantry or cupboard. On average, it will still be good for several weeks past the printed best-before date. Once opened, it's best to use it within 10 days to 2 weeks if refrigerated. Homemade minced garlic has a shorter life span and should be consumed within a week if refrigerated. However, it's not recommended to freeze raw minced garlic as it can compromise its flavor and texture. Good news is that you can store the minced garlic in olive oil in a sealed container and freeze it, which lasts up to 3 months for optimal taste but can be used up to 12 months.
How do you tell if minced garlic is bad?
If minced garlic turns a light shade of brown, it's starting to go bad. The garlic might also feel slimy or sticky. This usually means that mold is starting to form. However, the biggest giveaway is the smell. Garlic has an easily recognizable aromatic smell, so if your garlic smells off or sour, or if you see any signs of mold, it's likely not good to use anymore.
Tips for storing minced garlic to extend shelf life
• Keep your store-bought or homemade minced garlic in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard.
• After opening, move your minced garlic to the refrigerator. Be sure to seal the container tightly.
• If you really want to extend your garlic's shelf life, try mincing it, mixing it with olive oil, and freezing it in an airtight container or silicone mold for easy use in cooking.
• To keep your minced garlic from going bad, never use wet utensils to scoop it out. Doing so can introduce moisture and cause mold growth.
• Always use clean utensils when handling your minced garlic to avoid cross-contamination.
