Expiration & Storage Tips
When does rum extract expire?
Rum extract is a shelf-stable product with a very long lifespan. Unopened, it can last virtually indefinitely if stored correctly. Once opened, it should retain its potency and safety for about 4 to 5 years. Even if it's past this date, rum extract rarely 'spoils' in a way that would cause illness, but it can lose flavor over time. As for freezing, it's not usually necessary or recommended, as freezing doesn't extend the life of the extract and may change its properties.
How do you tell if rum extract is bad?
Determining whether rum extract has gone bad is mostly a matter of potency. The extract doesn't typically spoil or become unsafe to consume, but it will start to lose its flavor over time. If it’s been sitting in your cupboard for a few years, give it a sniff. If you can’t smell anything or if the fragrance has greatly faded, it might be time to replace it. Additionally, a change in color or any signs of mold are rare, but strong indications that the extract should be discarded.
Tips for storing rum extract to extend shelf life
• Always store rum extract in its original, tightly-sealed bottle.
• Place it in a cool, dry area, away from direct sunlight. The pantry or a kitchen cabinet is an ideal place.
• Keeping the cap tightly closed when not in use helps prevent the loss of flavor.
• There's no need to refrigerate or freeze rum extract, it's perfectly happy at room temperature.
