Expiration & Storage Tips
When does eggnog expire?
Unopened eggnog bought from the store typically has a use-by date marked on the carton which will be about 5-7 days after pasteurization - this will be the freshest and best time to enjoy your eggnog. Once opened, eggnog should be consumed within 5-7 days. If you freeze your eggnog, it can extend its life up to 6 months, but do bear in mind that the taste and texture may change slightly.
How do you tell if eggnog is bad?
If the eggnog develops a strange or sour smell, it's time to toss it. Other indications of spoilage include a change in color or consistency (it may become unusually thick or lumpy), or if the eggnog separates. Also, if you see mold, it's a sure sign that the eggnog is no longer good to drink.
Tips for storing eggnog to extend shelf life
• Always store eggnog in the fridge, even if it is unopened. It needs to be stored at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower to prevent the growth of bacteria.
• If you've made homemade eggnog, consume it immediately as it lacks the preservatives found in store-bought varieties that extend its shelf life.
• Consider freezing the eggnog in ice cube trays for longer storage, which will also give you convenient serving sizes.
• After opening, keep the carton tightly sealed to prevent air from getting in and spoiling the eggnog earlier.
