Expiration & Storage Tips
When does light rum expire?
Unopened bottles of light rum can last indefinitely, thanks to its high alcohol content. However, the quality might lessen after about 10 years, even if unopened. Once a bottle of light rum has been opened, it should ideally be consumed within a year or two, after which the quality and flavor might start to decline. Light rum doesn't typically freeze due to its alcohol content, so storing it in the freezer won't extend its shelf life.
How do you tell if light rum is bad?
Over time and due to prolonged exposure to air, light rum can oxidize, leading to changes in flavor. Though it won't be harmful, it may not taste as good. Signs that your rum has oxidized could include a duller or darker colour, a flat or diminished flavor, or a dusty or musky smell compared to its usual rich, smooth aroma.
Tips for storing light rum to extend shelf life
• Make sure to store your light rum upright in a cool, dark area away from heat and light. This will help to prevent the degradation of the cork and the rum.
• Always secure the cap or cork properly after each use. This will minimize exposure to air and help maintain its quality and flavor.
• Avoid storing your light rum in the fridge or freezer; the lower temperatures won't preserve the rum and may even negatively affect the taste and texture.
• If you've opened a bottle of light rum and won't finish it for some time, consider transferring it to smaller, airtight containers to reduce the amount of air exposure.
