Expiration & Storage Tips
When does coconut extract expire?
Coconut extract typically has a long shelf-life. When unopened and stored in a cool, dark place, it can last up to 3 to 4 years. However, even if it's beyond the expiration date on the label, it's generally safe to use until it begins to lose its flavor. Once opened, coconut extract will stay at its best quality for about 12 to18 months. Freezing is not a commonly used method of storage for this ingredient, but if preferred, it can be frozen. It doesn't usually freeze solid due to its alcohol content and can be used straight from the freezer.
How do you tell if coconut extract is bad?
Telling if coconut extract has gone bad isn't too difficult even for those who are not kitchen aficionados. The most reliable way is by smell - if the extract has lost its scent or the aroma has become unpleasant, it's time to discard it. Changes in color or appearance (such as becoming cloudy or developing sediments) can also be a sign that it has spoiled. Lastly, if the flavor seems off when added to food, it's best to err on the side of caution and throw it out.
Tips for storing coconut extract to extend shelf life
• Store coconut extract in a cool, dark and dry place such as your pantry. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources.
• Keeping the bottle tightly sealed when not in use will also help maintain the quality and flavor.
• Be sure to use clean, dry teaspoons or droppers when you are dispensing the extract, to prevent contamination.
• If you don't use coconut extract often, consider buying small bottles to ensure you always have a fresh supply.
