Expiration & Storage Tips
When does candied cherry expire?
Candied cherries tend to have a longer shelf life due to their high sugar content which acts as a preservative. An unopened jar of candied cherries can last up to 2 years past the 'Best By' date printed on the package if stored properly. Once the jar has been opened, they should be used within 3-6 months for best flavor, although they can last longer if stored well. Freezing candied cherries is not common, however if you wanted to, you could freeze them for up to 12 months.
How do you tell if candied cherry is bad?
If the cherries develop an off smell, taste or develop a mold, it's best to toss them out. It's always wise to check for discoloration as well. Cherries that are decaying often have a soft texture compared to the normal firmness of candied cherries.
Tips for storing candied cherry to extend shelf life
• Store candied cherries in a cool, dry place
• Once opened, it's best if they're stored in an airtight container in the fridge
• Avoid using wet utensils to scoop them out; this introduces water and promotes microbial activity, which can cause them to spoil quicker
• Respect the 'Best By' date as a guideline but also use your judgement in assessing smell, texture and taste
