Expiration & Storage Tips
When does spiced rum expire?
Spiced Rum, like other spirits, has an almost indefinite shelf life, especially when it remains unopened. There won’t be any noticeable difference in taste over the years provided the bottle is stored properly. Once a bottle of Spiced Rum is opened, it's good for 3-6 months for optimal taste, but it will remain safe to consume indefinitely if stored right. Keep in mind, exposure to light and temperature changes can decrease the quality of the rum over time. Spiced Rum doesn’t freeze because of its high alcoholic content, so it's not commonly stored that way in households.
How do you tell if spiced rum is bad?
While Spiced Rum doesn't really expire or spoil, it can deteriorate in quality over time, particularly if it's exposed to air. If the rum has been open and unused for a significant period, you may notice a difference in the aroma or flavor - it could become flat, dull, or loss its spice character. The color may also appear darker. But don't worry about getting sick, even if it's not quite up to snuff, it's still safe to consume.
Tips for storing spiced rum to extend shelf life
• Store your Spiced Rum in a dark, cool place to help preserve its quality. Light and heat are the enemies of rum.
• Keep your bottles standing upright. While this isn't a matter of life or death for rum, it will help save the labels in case you use it for display.
• When the bottle is opened, ensure the top is tightly sealed after each use to reduce exposure to air.
• Consume opened bottles within 3-6 months for the best flavor, although it is still safe beyond that time.
• You may choose to decant the rum into smaller bottles if you find you aren't using it fast enough. This will limit the rum's exposure to oxygen and help maintain its flavor.
